Early 2016 a friend invited me to a vision board party at her home. I’d created collages as a teenager, but this was a first for me as an adult. The party was amazing! Here’s a word of advice, if you ever get invited to party with a group of African women, go. You will have the time of your life! Besides the amazing company, conversations and food - I was introduced to vision boarding or creating a collage that is a visual representation of your dreams, goals, and things that make you happy.
Before getting started we watched a YouTube video and some of the women there shared about their experiences with the activity. One woman even shared how she printed a picture of a car and ended up with the exact same car.
The board I created that evening has been on my bathroom wall for two years. Having a visual reminder of my priorities helped me stay focus throughout that time and was an easy way to be honest about my progress and to assess whether my priorities were evolving or if I was simply off base. I’m at a new place in my life and believe it’s time for a new board, but before I sit down to establish new goals and priorities, I thought I’d share my reflections on my 2016/2017 board.
Any day is a good opportunity to spruce up certain areas in our lives, but there’s something very special about the dawn of a new year. It’s 2018 and folks all over the place are setting goals and making plans to become a better version of themselves. What’s your motivation? Are your fitness goals fueled by a 20 year class reunion? Or perhaps the passing of a loved one has you thinking about how you can be more present with your family. While it’s great to be motivated, you may also benefit from a little help, some useful tools, and support from communities of like-minded folks.
Keep reading to discover a few ideas that may get you past the initial excitement of the new year and keep you on the road to accomplishing your goals.
Getting in shape does not have to be expensive or dreadful, as it may seem. There are plenty of ways to look and feel your best without it wreaking havoc on your pockets and time. With summer quickly approaching and on the cusp of failed news year’s resolutions who wouldn’t want to finally look their best? Some go getter pointers that have worked for me that I know for sure will work on even the most unmotivated and are so simple, even a cave man can do it. Therefore, whatever excuse you have, I know I have something to combat it, and if it’s not listed….it just wasn’t a good enough excuse!
For my money conscious friends, working out from home yields just as great results and you never have to step foot in a gym. There are a few options to present to you. If you live in a condo or apt, most have work out facilities to use free of charge, an incentive with your rent. If you don’t, you have at least one friend that does live in a condo, which is even better; you can use the buddy system! If you’re saying the equipment isn’t as modern, excuse, all you need is about 25 minutes of cardio, open space for squats, and a little weights, to get you looking and feeling your best in no time.
Another option is work out dvds. You can shed pounds with out spending them. You pay one small price for a dvd that you can use for a life time. One that I highly recommend is P90X…amazing! You don’t have to ever worry about getting bored, needing variety, or being pushed to the limit. If you stick with it for 90 days, you are guaranteed to see results. No matter where you are, there are probably tons of parks in your vicinity. Running or walking are very viable options, also good ways to cut calories and build endurance, if you have children, take them with you! You can throw a Frisbee around which is great bonding time and also allows you to exercise fluid movement.
